Addicton, Kanye West

"Addiction"
[Chorus]
[Kanye (Female Voice)]

Why everything that's supposed to bad make me feel so good?
Everything they told me not to is exactly what I would
Man I tried to stop man I tried the best I could
But (You make me smile)

What's your addiction? Is it money? Is it girls? Is it weed?
I've been afflicted by not one, not two, but all three
She's got the same thing, about me, but more, about us
She's coming over, so I guess, that means, I'm on drugs
Just let me peek now, I mean damn, I'm so curious
She's got a lover, so the lies, and the lust, is a rush
Time's of the essence, I need, you to be, spontaneous
Roll up the doge, henny and c-c-c-cola, then I'm co coming over
Cuz its ne-never over
[Chorus]
Why everything that's supposed to bad make me feel so good?
Everything they told me not to is exactly what I would
Man I tried to stop man I tried the best I could
But (You make me smile)
I see the emotion in your eyes, that you, try not to show
We get the closest when you high, or you drunk, or you blow
So I pour the potion, so we could both get high, as we could go
Then I'll get the lotion, and do something to me, when your thighs is exposed
There's no turning back now, I mean I don't mean to impose
Not now but right now, I need you to undress, and then pose
I'm into that now, catch a vibe, when the doors, get closed
Roll up the doge, henny and c-c-c-cola, and I keep co coming over
Cuz its ne-never over

[Chorus][Female Voice]
Why everything that's supposed to bad make me feel so good?
Everything they told me not to is exactly what I would
Man I tried to stop man I tried the best I could
But... (You Make Me Smile)(You make me smile with my heart)

[INSTRUMENTAL]

[Chorus]
Why everything that's supposed to bad make me feel so good?
Everything they told me not to is exactly what I would
Man I tried to stop man I tried the best I could
But... (You make me smile, With my heart)

I just wanted to ask you
Just wanted to um
Let how would I put this uhh
Let's say all your friends
Remember the one
You said if you ever she would be the one
Ok, Ok, Ok (You make me smile with my heart)
I was thinking, hypothetically
I mean don't take this seriously
Don't take me: I mean just
Uhh not credibly
I'm feeling incrediblyI mean let it be
Just let it be
I mean you, her and me (You make me smile with my heart)
I mean you, her and me
Maybe, Baby, Baby
You know I was just kidding

Kanye Omari West was born on June 8, 1977. He is an American rapper and has won many awards. His first CD released in 2002 was The College Dropout. He has three other albums. His latest album 808’s & Heartbreak debuted number one on the Billboard Top 100. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia and lived with both of his parents. When Kanye was three his parents divorced and his mother moved to Chicago, Illinois. He attended Polaris High School in suburban Oak Lawn, Illinois. He went to college for art but dropped out when he discovered he wanted to go into the music industry. His song “Addiction” featured on Late Registration released in 2005, has a lot of poetic terms. It shows emotion through addiction, even though he’s not addicted to anything. This song is a cohesive narrative also.

The first line in the chorus is ironic. It says, ‘Why everything that’s supposed to be bad make me feel so good?” it’s ironic because the things, or drugs, he’s talking about he likes to do but its bad for you. The second line to the chorus, “Everything they told me not to is exactly what I would.” Is ambiguity because whether he’s talking about drugs or alcohol, people don’t want him to do it but he wants to. In the second stanza, the first two lines represent paradox, “What’s your addiction? Is it money? Is it girls? Is it weed? I’ve been afflicted by not one, not two, but all three.” because he’s saying he’s been hurt by money, girls, and weed. This might be an unexpected truth because he’s asking what someone’s addicted to then he says he’s been hurt by being addicted to all three of the things. Still in the second stanza, “She’s got the same thing, about me, but more about us.” symbolizes that him and this girl don’t really have anything in common besides being addicted to the same thing. The next line, “She’s comin over, so I guess, that means, I’m on drugs.” is ironic because she’s going to his house but only to do drugs. The second to last line in the second stanza is alliteration, “Roll up the doge, henny and c-c-c-cola, then I’m co comin over”. In the fourth stanza, “There’s no turning back now,” is figurative language because he’s saying they already did it you cant undo it. In the same stanza, “Not now but right now,” is word play because he says not now then right now.

This whole song is a cohesive narrative in a way. He’s telling the story of a drug addict. I don’t really understand this song because he’s not a drug addict. There is a lot of irony in this song. Also there is ambiguity, paradox, symbolism, alliteration, figurative language, and wordplay. This song can be confusing, but it all comes together and makes sense.
